Civil marriage in Oslo City Hall
In Oslo you can get married in the City Hall. A civil ceremony is a non-religious, legal marriage ceremony. The Norwegian marriage law is gender-neutral.

Getting married in Oslo City Hall
Before you can get married, you must:
- Book an appointment for your wedding ceremony
- Apply for a Certificate of no impediment (prøvingsattest) and upload it
- Pay for the wedding ceremony (applies to all couples on Saturdays. On Wednesdays and Fridays, only couples living in other municipalities than Oslo must pay)
- Bring two witnesses aged 18 or older
When can you get married?
- Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays
- Closed on public holidays and week 28, 29 and 30
- Do you want a ceremony within the next two weeks? Contact us if you already have a valid Certificate of no impediment. We will check if any appointments are available.
Book time for the wedding ceremony
You can book an appointment:
- Up to one year in advance
- You may only have one active booking
- Log in and choose an available date before entering your details. The application is only available in Norwegian.
- You will receive an information letter from Oslo City Hall within two weeks after your booking.
- After you upload your Certificate of no impediment, you will receive information about your wedding ceremony.
- Information letters are sent to Altinn or your chosen digital mailbox. If you have reserved yourself against digital communication, you will receive letters by regular mail.
Cancel your booking
Log in to Mine bookinger, select the booking you want to cancel and choose “kanseller booking”. You can make a new booking once the previous one is cancelled.
If you cannot use the booking system
Send an email to vielser@rft.oslo.kommune.no including:
- First and last names
- Email addresses
- Phone numbers
- Three preferred dates
- Ceremony language (Norwegian or English)
- Whether you plan a cultural element (e.g. song or poem)

Certificate of no impediment (prøvingsattest)
Visit the Norwegian Tax Administration’s website to read more and apply for the Certificate of no impediment (prøvingsattest).
Upload the certificate no later than 4 weeks before the wedding ceremony. If we have not received the certificate within the deadline, your reservation will be cancelled.
Please note that the certificate is valid for 4 months. Apply well in advance, as the Tax Administration normally requires 5-6 weeks to process the application.

Upload the certificate as an original PDF by logging into My Bookings and opening your booking. If you received the document by post, you may scan and upload it or send it by mail to:

Legal stay
You both need to have legal stay in Norway on the day of your ceremony. If the Certificate of no impediment includes comments about legal stay, you must upload documentation no later than 4 weeks before the ceremony. The documentation can be uploaded by logging in to My Bookings.

Payment
Payment is made after the Certificate of no impediment has been submitted. Payment information will be sent to you in an information letter. Prices are adjusted annually.
If you live in Oslo or if both of you live abroad:
- Wednesday/Friday: Free
- Saturday: 3 478 NOK
If you live in another Norwegian municipality:
- Wednesday/Friday: 3 172 NOK
- Saturday: 3 478 NOK
All couples are warmly welcome to get married at Oslo City Hall. However, we would like to point out that all municipalities offer civil marriage ceremonies free of charge to their residents. Please contact your municipality for more information.
The wedding day
- The ceremony is held in the Munch Room, upstairs from the main hall
- The ceremony is based on the procedure for a civil marriage
- Duration: 10-15 minutes
- You may bring guests, but the total number of people cannot exceed 30. This includes children and photographer(s)
- You may exchange rings
Witnesses
- Two witnesses aged 18 or older must be present
- They do not need to be best men/maids or Norwegian citizens
- The City Hall does not provide witnesses
Interpreter
The ceremony can be held in Norwegian or English. If one or both of you don't speak Norwegian or English, we can offer a written translation of the text or arrange and pay for an authorized interpreter (onsite or over the phone). Request this when booking — we will contact you for more information.
Remember to bring valid ID
On the wedding day, you and your two witnesses must bring valid ID:
- Passports
- National ID cards issued in Schengen
- Norwegian driver’s licence (physical or digital)
- Norwegian bank card with photo and personal ID number
Other digital IDs are not accepted. The ceremony cannot be conducted without valid ID.
Visitor guidelines
- For the consideration of other visitors and to keep the building clean and safe, the following are not allowed, inside or outside Oslo City Hall: balloons, alcohol, rice, rose petals, confetti and soap bubbles. Please inform your guests about these rules
- City Hall is open to visitors during opening hours
- Please be aware that photography may be limited in some rooms
- In some cases, rooms other than the Munch Room may be used for the ceremony
Marriage certificate
After the ceremony, you will receive a temporary marriage certificate. The final marriage certificate will be sent to you by the Tax Administration. Processing times may vary.

Copy of marriage certificate
For copies of your marriage certificate, contact the appropriate authority based on the date of your marriage:
- Before 1975: Contact the State Archive
- Before 1 October 2004: Contact the District Court
- After 1 October 2004: Contact the Tax Administration
Gender-neutral marriage
The Norwegian marriage law is gender-neutral. This means that same sex couples can get married in Norway. Previously entered partnerships can be converted into marriage upon application to the National Registry.
