CodeZERO
Creating sustainable, zero-emission last-mile delivery and return solutions for e-commerce.
The City of Oslo aims to develop a sustainable and vibrant city. To achieve this goal, it is essential to explore new and innovative solutions for goods distribution. In collaboration with IKEA and the Norwegian Institute of Transport Economics (TØI), The City of Oslo is participating in the Horizon European project CodeZERO, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of last-mile deliveries.
CodeZERO is a three-year project, focusing on developing sustainable and emission-free solutions for e-commerce logistics. The project aims to make these solutions economically viable and attractive to both businesses and consumers.
As part of the project, the City of Oslo will pilot a new delivery model developed by IKEA called "Click and Collect Near You." The model operates on the principle of delivery vans traveling to predetermined pickup points, rather than making direct-to-home deliveries. These locations can be existing transportation hubs or areas highly trafficked on foot, enabling customers to collect their orders as part of their daily routine. The objective is to optimize delivery routes and significantly reduce the distance travelled.
By implementing this solution, it is anticipated that emissions from goods transportation can be reduced by up to 75%.
Through the pilot project in Oslo, we seek to enhance our understanding of e-commerce patterns and contribute to a more holistic urban planning approach. By co-locating various functions within the urban environment, we can improve the quality of life for both residents and businesses.
The specific objectives of the pilot project are:
- Location of pick-up points: To identify the most attractive locations for pick-up points based on customer behaviour and accessibility.
- Environmental impact: To evaluate the extent to which the solution contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion.
- Consumer behaviour: To examine whether the service can increase the proportion of consumers choosing sustainable delivery options.
Why:
Recent years have witnessed a significant transformation in the shopping habits of Oslo's residents, a development profoundly influenced by the pandemic. The surge in online shopping and home delivery services has led to escalating consumer demands for expedited delivery times, often with same-day delivery expectations. Consequently, urban traffic has encountered novel challenges, including increased congestion, more vehicles within the city, and elevated levels of noise and pollution.
Concurrent with these evolving shopping patterns, it is important for the City of Oslo to take a proactive role in fostering multimodal transportation solutions. By acquiring a comprehensive understanding of the diverse transportation services available within the market, the city can identify optimal services and integrate those into the city's existing infrastructure. Such a holistic approach is indispensable for ensuring efficient and sustainable land use within a city characterized by rapid growth and competition for limited resources.
Through this project, we endeavour to enhance our comprehension of the underlying motivations that drive consumer decision-making. Moreover, we seek to explore the potential to influence consumer attitudes and preferences toward more sustainable choices.
Oslo ‘role
As part of this project, the City of Oslo will together with IKEA identify suitable locations for piloting the service. A range of locations will be selected to facilitate comprehensive data collection, enabling comparative analysis by TØI.
