17 April: The kindergartens will open again
Press release: Oslo’s 730 kindergartens will be gradually re-opened during the period 20-27 April. All parents and guardians will receive information from their respective City District (bydel) and kindergarten, about which day the children will be welcomed back, and what changes will be needed due to the coronavirus.
Note: Information about measures taken against the spread of the Corona virus is changed on an ongoing basis. This means that the information in the press release may be outdated. You will find updated information on the web page Corona virus: Information on the Corona virus and measures that have been implemented in the city of Oslo.
Since 28 February, the City government has been on emergency alert, and since 11 March this has been at the highest level. The City officials release updates about steps taken to prevent further spreading of the Coronavirus.
Kindergartens re-open gradually
Kindergartens and schools have been closed since 13 March. The staff will get special training to meet the requirements for infection prevention in each kindergarten. The days will feel different for both grown-ups and children, but the safety of children, staff and parents will come first.
Vice Mayor for Education, Inga Marte Thorkildsen, says, «In these very difficult times, I am really pleased that we can now start to re-open the kindergartens and, a little later, the schools. It means a lot for both children and youths, a lot for their parents and a lot for the whole society. It is important that we make use of the week that lies ahead, for a gradual introduction. Children in the risk-groups will be well cared-for, and there will be strict rules. »
In order to limit the risk of infection, all the children must take food with them for the whole day, and the City of Oslo recommends limited opening hours to 08.30-15.00 during the first weeks. It is important that all children with respiratory symptoms are kept at home from the kindergarten.
School and activity school (AKS)
Following our plan, the schools and AKS will re-open for 1st to 4th grades on 27 April. Parents and pupils will receive information about how the schools will manage this, before they re-open.
