14 January: Oslo has started mass vaccination

Press release: The City of Oslo has set up 15 vaccination centres and started to vaccinate those who live in their own homes today.

The City of Oslo has set up 15 vaccination centres and started to vaccinate those who live in their own homes today.

“The City Government is doing all it can so that we can vaccinate as many people as possible as quickly as possible. I am very pleased that the first round of vaccinations in nursing homes and sheltered housing has been completed, and we can now start vaccinating people who live at home”, said Governing Mayor Raymond Johansen (Labour).

From today, people over 85 years old will be vaccinated. After that, younger residents will be vaccinated, in 5-year age groups. When everyone who is older than 65 has been vaccinated, the City will continue with vaccination for those under 65 years. Those with health conditions will be prioritised first.

All the urban districts (bydeler) have set up their own vaccination centres, which are opening this week. Here it will be possible to vaccinate up to 63,000 people each week. In addition, four regional centres will open in February, to support the work in the largest urban districts. They can vaccinate up to 44,800 people each week. This give Oslo a total capacity to vaccinate up to 110,000 residents every week.

«The speed of vaccinations will largely depend on how many doses we receive, and I seriously hope that Oslo, as the epicentre for the Corona pandemic in Norway, will be prioritised”, said Johansen.

At the start of week 2 (11th January), Oslo will have received 9,000 doses of Corona-vaccine, of which 7,800 come from Pfizer and 1,800 from Moderna. The first dose of the Moderna-vaccine will be given in Grünerløkka urban district (bydel) on Friday.

“The vaccine is safe, free and voluntary, and I encourage everyone to take it. You will be contacted by the City for an appointment”, said the Vice Mayor for Health, Ageing and Municipal Services, Robert Steen (Labour).
